MESSAGE

Improving Health Care with Data Science
Health and medical information have become much more electronic than it was a decade ago. However, this data is not being used in an interconnected manner. For example, if a patient had an allergy to a drug that was identified at a certain medical institution, it was recorded in the medical record of another medical institution. Patients have to re-declare when they visit an institution. By connecting data, this situation can be improved. There is currently a lot of fragmented information across different domains, such as medical information, information on medical examinations, and information on the use of welfare services. If we can connect and utilize this information, we will be able to introduce health and medical services that perfectly match the needs of each person. My goal is to deliver the right and affordable service (cares), at the right time, just like a concierge in a first-class hotel.

NARRATIVE CV

I was in charge of an exhaustive survey of the use of psychiatric services in Japan, providing statistical information necessary for policy-making and using the survey data to evaluate policy in mental health care in Japan for more than 10 years at the National Institute of Mental Health, National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry (NCNP).

I have also been working for the World Mental Health Japan survey, which is a part of the WHO’s international epidemiological study of mental disorders. I belong to this survey group as an epidemiologist and a data analyst.

My specialty is epidemiology and biostatistics. As a visiting professor of Research Center for Medical and Health Data Science, the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, I have train advanced experts in biostatistics and human resources through statistical education. I have also been working to improve the quality of research in clinical trials of psychiatric and neurological disorders and epidemiological studies of non-communicable diseases through the application of statistical causal inference methods at iGHP, NCNP, and the Department of Healthcare Quality Assessment, The University of Tokyo. I also aim to make all people healthier through the use of real-world data to improve health and medical systems.
