At iGHP, I conduct research on global health diplomacy, global health governance and law for health, paying attention to the political, social and legal dimensions of global health issues.

NARRATIVE CV

Prof. Dr. Yasushi KATSUMA (Ph.D., LL.M.) is Director of the Department of Global Health Affairs & Governance at the Institute for Global Health Policy Research (iGHP) in the National Center for Global Health and Medicine (NCGM), Japan. He is also Professor of International Studies Program at the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies (GSAPS) in Waseda University, while serving the University as a Board of Trustees member. In addition, he is Professor and Co-Director of Master’s Program in Global Leadership at Vietnam-Japan University (VJU) in Hanoi; and Visiting Professor at the Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability, United Nations University (UNU-IAS).

Currently, Prof. Katsuma serves The BMJ in London as an International Advisory Board member; the Japan Society for International Development (JASID) as a Director; the Japan Association for International Health (JAIH) as a Councilor; and the Japanese Organization for International Cooperation in Family Planning (JOICFP) as a Board member.

Previously, Prof. Katsuma was Visiting Scholar at the Elliot School of International Affairs, The George Washington University; Visiting Professor at the Institute of Developing Economies Advanced School (IDEAS) in Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) in Chiba; Visiting Researcher at Banco Solidario in Bolivia. He also served the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as an Advisory Panel member of its Human Development Report; the World Health Organization Regional Office for the Western Pacific (WHO-WPRO) as an Advisor in Law for Health; the JASID as a Vice-President; and the Japan Association for United Nations Studies (JAUNS) as the Secretary-General and a Director.

Before taking academic positions, Prof. Katsuma worked for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), based in Mexico, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Tokyo. Prior to his appointments at the United Nations, he worked as a development consultant for Japan’s official development assistance (ODA) at the Engineering & Consulting Firms Association (ECFA), Tokyo, conducting research in Bangladesh, Thailand, Paraguay and Russian Far East.

Prof. Katsuma received his Ph.D. (development) from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the University of Wisconsin-Madison; LL.M. & LL.B. from Law School of Osaka University; and B.A. from International Christian University, after participating in a British scientific expedition project in La Mosquitia, Honduras and studying at the University of California-San Diego.
