This study evaluated prevalence and risk factors for post–COVID-19 condition among 8,392 adults aged 20 to 69 years who were diagnosed as having COVID-19 between July and August 2022 in Shinagawa City, Tokyo, in comparison with 6,318 age- and sex-matched non-infected controls.

  • The frequency of post–COVID-19 condition was 11.8%, which was two times higher than the frequency of symptoms lasting more than two months in the control group.
  • Ageugia, muscle weakness, anosmia, hair loss, and brain fog were distinctive symptoms among infected persons.
  • Female sex, underlying medical conditions, and severity of acute COVID-19 were associated with having post–COVID-19 condition, while vaccination before infection was associated with a lower risk of post–COVID-19 condition.
  • Among those with post–COVID-19 condition, 8.5% reported serious life disturbances to their daily lives six months after infection.

COVID-19 infection can lead to prolonged symptoms, even in those who experienced mild illness during an Omicron-dominant epidemic.
