A new paper titled “Secondhand smoke and the risk of incident cardiovascular disease among never-smoking women” by Specially Appointed Researcher Kobayashi et al. was published at Preventive Medicine.

Secondhand smoke to the wife from her husband's smoking was associated with an increased risk of incident cardiovascular disease, particularly ischemic heart disease among middle-aged never-smoking Japanese women. Our result implied that secondhand smoke from husbands may need to be avoided for the prevention of cardiovascular disease. This study was based on the results of a survey of approximately 24,000 never-smoking women aged 40-59 years who lived in nine health centers in Japan in 1990 and 1993 and followed them until 2012.
