[Publication] A new paper titled “Predictors of chronic loneliness during adolescence: a population-based cohort study” by Dr Hosozawa and all is published on Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health

We identified adolescent loneliness trajectories and examined its predictors, and association with later suicidal outcomes using data from 3165 Japanese adolescents in the general population.

The results showed that loneliness at any degree in early adolescence increases the risk of later suicidal outcomes (i.e., suicidal ideation and self-harm), and that this risk is extremely high among children with prolonged loneliness.

Addressing bullying and caregiver mental health, which were predictors of prolonged and increasing loneliness trajectories, may help to reduce loneliness among adolescents and prevent subsequent suicidality.
