Dr. Sugiyama et al. published an original article titled “Different incidences of diabetic retinopathy requiring treatment since diagnosis according to the course of diabetes diagnosis: a retrospective cohort study” in Scientific Reports.

In this study, they used the JMDC Claims Database, which contains the health insurance union's claims and health check data, to examine the incidence rate of diabetic retinopathy treatment for 126,696 patients diagnosed with diabetes during the observation period. They categorized these patients based on the course of diabetes diagnosis. It turns out that even when the duration from the diagnosis of diabetes (apparent disease duration) was the same, the incidence rate of diabetic retinopathy treatment varied significantly depending on how the diabetes diagnosis was made (whether there was no health checkup just before and treatment started promptly after the diagnosis, or whether a high HbA1c value was first pointed out during a health check just before). This suggests there are differences in the disease duration before the diagnosis of diabetes due to the course of the diabetes diagnosis, implying that we should not only focus on the apparent disease duration but also pay attention to the course of diabetes diagnosis.
