[Event] Prof. Iso spoke at the Galien African Forum

Prof. Iso spoke at the Galien African Forum, “Combating Non-Communicable Diseases in Africa!” held from 3rd to 7th October.
Approximately 3000 people, including web participants, attended the international conference on combating NCDs in Africa held in Senegal (October 3-7, 2023).
Prof. Iso participated on the web as a speaker at the sessions (1) “Youth and innovation in combating non-communicable diseases” on October 4 and (2) “The issue of nutrition in Africa (malnutrition, obesity and overweight), what solution?” on October 7.

In session (1), they introduced a smartphone-based tool that connects patients with hypertension and diabetes to their primary physicians for the management of blood pressure and glucose levels. Prof. Iso emphasized the importance of evaluating its effectiveness in the African population through RCT and ensuring continuity, including incentives for primary physicians.

In session (2), the moderator asked two questions: (i) the reasons behind Japan’s high life expectancy and the role of dietary habits, and (ii) important factors to be taken into account while tackling NCDs in Africa. By drawing lessons learned from Japan’s experience and achievements, Prof. Iso responded to (i) the involvement of salt reduction and improvement of nutritional balance and (ii) the importance and effectiveness of health checkups as the secondary prevention among the primary to tertiary prevention.
